My sentence: There's always that one toady friend in the group, that everyone is annoyed of but can't confront because they've never actually done anything blatantly malicious.

OK. Your sentence needs some work to make it read more smoothly. How about this:

There's always that one toady friend in the group, the one everyone's annoyed with (not of) but can't confront because he's (not they've) never actually done anything blatantly malicious.
